Frost: What Trichomes Tell You About Quality
That sparkly, sugar-dusted coat on a good bud isn't just for show. It's where nearly all the flavour and strength live. Learn to read it and you'll spot quality at a glance.
Everyone loves a frosty bud. It looks expensive, it photographs well and it usually smells incredible. But frost is more than a pretty finish. Look closer, and it tells you how the plant was grown, when it was harvested and how it's been looked after since.
What trichomes are
Trichomes are tiny resin glands that cover the flowers and sugar leaves. Under a lens, they look like miniature mushrooms: a thin stalk topped with a round, glassy head.
That head is where the plant makes and stores its cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, and its terpenes, the compounds behind the aroma. More healthy, intact trichomes usually means more flavour and more character. Kief, the golden dust at the bottom of your grinder, is simply trichomes that have broken off.
Milky, clear or amber?
The colour of the trichome heads shows how ripe the plant was at harvest. Growers watch them closely to pick the right moment.
- Clear — still developing. Picked a little early, and often lighter in character.
- Milky (cloudy white) — at or near peak. The sweet spot most growers aim for.
- Amber — past peak and maturing. A later harvest, often described as rounder and heavier.
Most top-shelf flower shows mainly milky heads with a sprinkle of amber. You'll need a jeweller's loupe or a phone macro lens to see the colour clearly.
How to judge quality yourself
- Look for even coverage. Good flower is frosted all over, right into the crevices and across the sugar leaves, not just on top.
- Check the heads are intact. Under a loupe, you want round, plump heads on their stalks. Flattened or snapped heads mean rough handling.
- Smell it. Healthy trichomes carry a strong, clear aroma. A faint or flat smell suggests the terpenes have faded.
- Feel it. Fresh flower is slightly sticky and springy. It shouldn't crumble to dust or feel damp.
- Watch the jar. A light dusting of kief at the bottom is normal. A thick layer means the buds have been knocked about.
Red flags
- White fuzz or grey webbing. That's mould, not frost. Real trichomes sparkle; mould looks dull and cobwebby.
- A musty or damp smell. Fresh flower smells of the strain, not of a wet cellar.
- Glitter that looks too perfect. Frost that rubs off like powder or looks oddly uniform may have been dusted on to fake quality.
- Brown, brittle buds. A sign of old stock or poor storage, with the trichomes long past their best.
If anything looks or smells off, don't use it.
Frost is the plant's own quality label. Even coverage, intact heads and a strong aroma are what you're after. Next time, grab a loupe and look closer. Every bud at Leafe is hand-picked and checked for frost before it goes in the jar.
