LOW & SLOW
Edibles: how not to overdo it.
Low & Slow: Edibles Without Overdoing It
Edibles are brilliant: tasty, discreet and long-lasting. They're also the easiest way to overdo it. One rule keeps them fun: start low, go slow.
We've all heard the story. Someone eats a gummy, feels nothing after half an hour, eats another "just to be sure", and spends the evening wishing they hadn't. It's the classic edible mistake, and it's completely avoidable.
Why edibles hit differently
When you smoke or vape, THC reaches your bloodstream through your lungs within minutes. When you eat it, it goes through your stomach and liver first. Your liver turns THC into a compound that many people find stronger and longer-lasting.
That's why an edible can feel more intense than the same amount smoked, and why it takes so much longer to arrive. What you've eaten that day, your metabolism and your tolerance all change how quickly and how strongly it lands.
Timing: the waiting game
Edibles are slow. Here's roughly how an evening unfolds, though everyone is a little different.
- 0–30 minutes: usually nothing. This is normal.
- 30 minutes – 2 hours: the effects start to build. On a full stomach, it can take even longer.
- 2–4 hours: the peak.
- 4–8 hours or more: a slow fade. Some people still feel it the next morning.
The golden rule: wait at least two hours before even thinking about having more.
Finding your dose
Always check the label: it tells you how much THC is in each piece. Many gummies hold 10 mg per piece, which is a full dose for most people and too much for a first try. Cutting a gummy into halves or quarters is perfectly normal.
- Never tried edibles — start with 2.5 mg, a quarter of a 10 mg gummy.
- Occasional user — start with 5 mg, half a 10 mg gummy.
- Regular user — 10 mg, once you know how you react.
These are general starting points, not medical advice. If you take medication or have a health condition, check with a doctor or pharmacist first.
Golden rules
- Eat something first. A light meal makes the experience smoother and more predictable.
- Don't mix with alcohol. Together they hit much harder than either alone.
- Never drive or operate anything after taking an edible.
- Pick a relaxed setting. Home, good company, nothing you need to be sharp for.
- Store them safely. Edibles look like sweets. Keep them locked away from children and pets.
Taken too much?
It happens, and it passes. Stay calm, find somewhere comfortable and sip some water. A snack and a nap often help. Remind yourself it will wear off. If you feel very unwell, or someone has chest pain, trouble breathing or faints, get medical help straight away.
Start low. Go slow. Give it two hours, mate. Edibles reward patience, and the best evening is the one you plan, not the one that surprises you. Questions about dosing? The Leafe team is always happy to help you pick the right gummy.
